GORDONVALE FIRE STATION

Challenging and Innovative

A flora and fauna assessment was conducted due to the site being located within two kilometres of a high risk area containing endangered, vulnerable or near threatened species. The assessment concluded the development was unlikely to disturb such species and as such the project proceeded to detailed design.

Field Construct in partnership with Julianne McAlloon Architechts arranged a site inspection of the Mareeba Fire and Rescue Station build four years earlier by Field Construct. This inspection was conducted with a view of flagging any opportunities for improvement and directly consulting with the QFES onsite staff. From this fruitful inpection 20 recommendation were raised with many being adopted; impact wall linings, 400 high epoxy skirting to engine bays, high performance acoustic tiled ceiling and LED lighting to name a few. Responding to client concerns with their own preliminary design; Field Construct introduced a discrete toilet bowl extraction system which negated the otherwise certain requirement for a costly reconfiguration of the entire station layout. This avoided addditional cost and delays.

Field Construct was engaged by the Public Safety Business agency to design and construct a modern fire and rescue station accommodationg one permanent and 19 auxiliary staff replacing the existing non-functioning station build in 1950.

Structurally, to reduce onsite contruction time and enabling greater quality/tolerance control, a complete self supporting steel frame was used. Offiste steel fabrication occurred in parallel with onsite civil and concrete works. All hot rolled steel work was hot dip galvanised afetr fabrication to ensure the required 50 year building life span. Field Constructs commitment to excellence resulted in an aesthetically pleasing, highly functional modern fire station which met all cilent project objectives and was completed ahead of time.

To be able to produce an emergency response faciltiy that has received glowing endorsements from Queenslad Fire and Emergency Services, Public Safety Business Agency and Builidng and Asset Services is a feather in the cap of Field Construct.
